Horowhenua District

The Horowhenua is a district of the Lower North Island of NZ and lies to the west of Palmerston North and just over an hour north of Wellington. It lies between the Tasman Sea and the Tararua Ranges and the main town centre is Levin on SH1. Other towns in the district include Foxton, Shannon and Tokomaru as well as other smaller beach communities. The mild climate and rich soils make Horowhenua very suitable to farming and especially horticulture and market gardening. There are number of specialist food & drinks producers and you can experience these first hand at the annual Horowhenua Taste Trail – “an event that celebrates the richness and diversity of all that is grown and produced in this bite-sized district” (see http://www.tastetrail.co.nz). If you love the outdoors, there are several cycle and both long and short walking tracks in the area. Not to mention the long stretch of beach access. Horowhenua District Council maintains the District’s parks and reserves and recreational spaces on behalf of its residents, to ensure that our District is a great place to live, work and play. Whether you’re a resident of Horowhenua or a visitor to the region, you will find a number of options on their website – see https://www.horowhenua.govt.nz
